Lord Shiva was used to recite the name of Lord Sri Hari Vishnu in its form of shahasrta naam before his breakfast at heart. Once upon a time holy mother ask lord Shiva about this chanting at heart then lord elaborate about the same.

It was so long to recite then mother Gauri ask if any other substitute which could earn the same spiritual merit but with a bit ease. Then lord Shiva said it is sri rama, is the shortest but equaling the shahastranaam.
